CEREC Omnicam VS. Bluecam
Omnicam vs. Bluecam
Curious about how the CEREC Omnicam and CEREC Bluecam compare? You're in luck. This month we've broken down the main differences (and similarities) between Sirona's two latest CAD systems.
Powder
The Omnicam is the first CAD system from Sirona that doesn't require powder. This adds considerably to its convenience factor.
The Bluecam does require powder, but only a thin layer.
Image Capture
The Bluecam combines several single images to create a 3D model.
The Omnicam, on the other hand, uses continuous image capturing to generate a 3D model.
As a result, the Bluecam is better suited for single-tooth restorations, while the Omnicam excels at full-arch and half-arch scans.
Distance from Teeth
The Bluecam's single-image capture method requires the camera to be placed directly on the tooth.
Thanks to its continuous image capturing, the Omnicam's camera can be moved closely over the teeth in a natural, flowing movement. This process can be interrupted and resumed at any time.
Patient Counseling Mode
Between the Bluecam and Omnicam, only the Omnicam allows the operator to record video clips of the scan so they can be shown to patients. This is called the Patient Counseling Mode, and is designed to improve case acceptance.
3D in Color
Generating a digital model in color, with natural shades, is another feature the Omnicam possesses that the Bluecam does not. This feature makes it easy to distinguish between gingiva and the preparation margin, and between gold, amalgam, and composite restorations.
Similarities
The Bluecam and Omnicam both:
- Require no fee to use Sirona Connect
- Require a fee to upgrade software
- Feature a scanning accuracy of 20 microns
- Take 0 to 5 minutes to process a digital file

Bottom Line
So after all's said and done, what does this comparison mean for you?
If you're a dental professional who's operating on a budget and doesn't mind working with powder, you'll probably be just fine with a Bluecam unit. You'll still be getting an easy-to-operate CAD system that features rapid image acquisition and 3D digital images.
For a bigger financial investment, the Omnicam will give you all the benefits of the Bluecam but without the need for powder, and with the addition of a Patient Counseling Mode and color scans.
So what do you think? Are you a Bluecam dentist or an Omnicam dentist?
